Six Shooters

Today marks the start of the In For Training countdown.  Tomorrow marks 38 days in which we will be taking our sweet boy back to Southeastern Guide Dogs to Guide Dog U to become a full-fledged Guide Dog.  To find his destiny.

But until that time, there are things to do, places to go, boxes to check.  One of those boxes that we had to check was the vet box.

Jam and Coach are on the tile and looking up at the camera in the vet's waiting room.

Coach needed to have a Bordatella vaccine, and he also needed to get his rabies vaccine, a letpo shot and an influenza shot.  Well, he happened to have a little hot spot (pododermatitis, for those of you in the know) on his left front paw, which necessitated another shot and by the time we were through, he was up to SIX shots!

Jam looks away from the camera rather pensively.

Jam was there for his first annual visit with Dr. Woodman, Animal Hospital of Northwood, who would now be his regular vet.  Dr. Don J. Woodman, who not only donates vet services to Southeastern, but is a puppy raiser with his family, was going to get the details about Jam's trachea weirdness and let us know what the medical plan was going to be (other than don't walk him in the heat and keep him nice and trim).

Meanwhile, back in the bootie area, Dr. Woodman had to give poor little Coach 6 injections.  Coach took it really well.

There was no crying.  No howling.  No whimpering.

I would have whined a little.  At least until I got a cookie.

They both got a cookie.  You can always count on a cookie at Dr. Woodman's.

Day 39 was a successful day.

Visiting the Vet

On Tuesday, Coach went to get a shot at the vets. Here is a photo of him on his way to the vets.

Everyone said he looked so sorrowful, but I think it is just his solemn demeanor. Plus I hadn't told him about the shots.

Here we are at the vets, waiting. He does seem a bit tense.

In the end, he got his shot with nary a whimper.  He was praised by all for his calm and steady personality.  Even the man who walked in to pay his bill and wanted to pet him was impressed.

"How old is he?"

"Four months."

"My four month old is nowhere near this well behaved."  Coach sat calmly while the man patted his head and scratched his chest.

He's calm on the outside, but I wonder what is going on inside his head...

HRH Goes to the Vet

Her Royal Highness Berkeley had her first vet appointment last week at Animal Hospital of Northwood with Dr. Woodman, who is also a puppy raiser. We were the only ones in the waiting room when we arrived, but soon enough a couple of other dogs came in with their owners. It was such a new experience to have someone say, "You have such a good puppy!" HRH was sitting and observing the new arrivals with a bit of a glacial, haughty air. Distant, but interested. The tail was slightly wagging, but no indication that a lunge was imminent.

What a difference!

We went into the examining room and met with the nursing staff, who were very sweet. In addition, I was offered something to drink (that was super nice!) while I waited (which wasn't very long at all) for Dr. Woodman. HRH needed a flu booster shot.

I think HRH won over the Dr. with her puppy cuteness, but that may be just my desire to do her bidding. Dr. Woodman and his staff won me over. I'm so glad we switched vets to his office. We definitely felt better taken care of and the service was more attentive and prompt. Plus, Dr. Woodman is a fellow puppy raiser, and how can you not like that. We'll be switching our chocolate lab Willow over into his care as well.
